Viewed about another third of this exhibition…
It’s interesting to see so much equipment, props and material related to Kubrick’s films: the helmet worn by Mathew Modine in Full Metal Jacket, one costume worn by Ryan O’Neal in Barry Lyndon, not to mention cameras he worked with and the ancient wheelchair which carried the cameraman with the then very new Steadicam while filming The Shining. The exhibition includes much of Kubrick’s extensive documentation in preparation for his unrealized film on Napoleon: for example his chronological color-coded card catalogue of the persons involved in the epic story. One catalogue drawer is even accessible for browsing.
I like seeing how Kubrick distilled dialogue to its essence in the screenplays that are on display. This corresponds to my sense of the dialogue while watching his films, particularly the early ones. His hardcover copy of The Shining is shown with extensive notes and dialogue rewrites. Also on display is King’s screenplay for the film: Kubrick not only worked on the dialogue that King had written, but also worked on King’s style in the scene descriptions, from what I could see he generally made it simpler, clearer and less dramatic. For example: “He is walking through the halls…” becomes “He walks through the halls.”
Of course we bought tickets in advance for next weekend’s 70mm showing of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
