Caravaggio → was never in Holland, but a number of Utrecht painters travelled to Rome in the early 17th century to study and be inspired by his work (music and genre paintings). Some of their work is shown here, next to some of Caravaggio’s.
The exhibition disappointed me somehow, though the paintings were good. But the juxtaposition of Caravaggio’s work and that of the Utrecht painters weakened them for me. This is certainly unfair of me and has more to do with the powerful impressions I have of Caravaggio’s work in my mind. I will go to the Städel &rarr sometime to see the exhibition again.
