Sianed Jones (Welsh) and Jaap Blonk (Dutch) were brilliant.
Sianed Jones performed an epic piece with her voice and a violin with non-word sounds of an incredible breadth and richness. Feelings and areas of the brain, at least my brain, were touched deeply, atavistically. It got me thinking of how tens of thousands of years, and more, were involved in our evolved ability to speak, and she completely circumvented that, or rose out of it, to avail herself of all of the remarkable nuances of our voicebox, so to speak (!), to express so much, so shatteringly, without pretense. Good for her.
Jaap Blonk was powerful, entertaining, and plain amusing. One piece was called Homage a A. A., which when spoken in German repeats three “ahh” sounds: Homage ahh ahh ahh. The A. A. is Antonin Artaud.
