I only watched about 15 minutes of this, then returned it so I would only have to pay for one day.
I am really put off by pretentious art films. The film, as far as I saw it, was all shot in panavision, wide-angle format, hand-held and not even with a steady-cam, and the acting was in the improv-ensemble style… of course the idea is that \”we are involved in real life here, and spontaneity, etc.\” Just what I need. Film is already real ... truth 24 times a second as Godard said; the light is real, the sound is real, the material and people filmed are already, always, real.
In a good film, even the fiction of consciously made elements (dialogue, image, etc.) is real. Films like this one, for me, turn material reality into a private fiction. The self-indulgent, self-absorbed style of this film endeavors to create an atmosphere of significance and meaning which in effect is nothing more than an expression and accumulation of the film-makers\’ inherited social style and prejudices. And we are to go along with it… in effect to escape into it, but without the honesty of an escapist film.
Films like this one do not help me to see and feel.
