After my recent visit to the Alps, in particular to Reinhold Messner’s home territory of South Tyrol in northern Italy, I took a renewed interest in the theme of mountain climbing, though from others’ point of view.
I bought and read the newest book on Messner, Mein Leben am Limit, which is a collection of interviews with Messner by Thomas Hüetlin, and very interesting. (I don’t know if it is out yet in English.)
That motivated me to reread the brilliant book, Into Thin Air, by one of my favorite authors, Jon Krakauer, on the tragic expeditions to the peak of Mount Everest in May, 1996. I finished rereading it on January 10th; the next day, Edmund Hillary, who with Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest in 1953, died.
