With one sentence each, this filmmaker’s movies could be stripped of their novelty, making it unnecessary to see them. As it is there is no reason to see them a second time.
To give him some credit, he is creative in carving out his own niche in the film industry. The niche he is carving out for himself exploits the atmosphere of us-against-them, the outlook that “us” (read: U.S.) is ultimately a benign force in a hostile world/universe (The Village⁄Signs). I have come across one European’s view that the filmmaker was holding a critical mirror up to the face of the U.S. — I just feel that this possibility is undermined by the his clear sympathies with his characters’ escapist and backward actions and with the view put forth in the film that true romantic love justifies and conquers all.
