This is a beautiful and intelligent film, and it is a pleasure to see it again — in fact I bought the DVD on sale. It’s been a long time since I last saw it, and I realized with this viewing how well the dialogue was woven together out of German, American and some French, throughout. It occurred to me that whenever I had seen it in the past, either in the states, London or in Germany, it would have been subtitled in some form or another, so this was the first time I’d seen it without subtitles.
