It is fascinating to see how the Romans set up shop so comfortably, for some of them, in this area so far away from home in the early centuries AD.
Speaking of which (putting this up on the 21st, though I will date it 20 January, when I was in Cologne) I took the text of bush’s inaugural address and replaced all 27 (!) instances of the word “freedom” with “domination,” and it reads a little better. The strong, driving presence of Christian fundamentalist vocabulary can stand as it is.
