Fifty Dead Men Walking 22 November 09

Despite its awkward title, taken from the book, it is a remarkable film on one aspect of the history of (Northern) Ireland. It is a true story about an informer working for the British. The title refers to the 50 people he ostensibly saved from the IRA. Yet one interesting and telling fact that comes to light in the film is that one of the IRA’s most active interrogators and assassins was in fact also working for the British. The lends the concept of agent provocateur a new level of iniquity.
Most of the performers speak a fast and rich Norther Irish, mainly Belfast, dialect.

I rented this film because it is based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith. I wouldn’t watch it a second time, but it was mildly interesting. (Another reason I took it out was because of Julia Stiles: I believe I have only seen her in the Bourne films.)

Someone lent me three Quentin Tarantino films, ones that I don’t already own: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Jackie Brown. The person also lent me From Dusk until Dawn, considering that to be a Tarantino film as well. I only watched about 20 minutes of the latter, which is ten minutes more than the first time I tried. It is just… crap. I don’t know how else to put it. The only thing interesting about the film is how it casts a light on the quality of the films Tarantino directed.

The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 8 September 09

I don’t know how many times I have seen this film. It is rich and poignant enough, yet there is more to see… in many scenese there is a deep focus, flattening the image and echoing Japanese woodcut styles.
And I never fail to be moved when Kyuzo and Kikuchiyo are shot by the bandit hidden in the hut.
